Exported services sourced from China equal over one-tenth (10.7%) of the $2.494 trillion products China exported in 2018. In 2017, China’s percentage of exported services to products was lower at 10.1%.
China’s exported services increased in value by 21.8% since 2014 and appreciated 17% from 2017 to 2018.
China’s Export Services by Category
Below are services exported by China in 2018 listed by category and in order starting with highest dollar values. Eleven of these categories are considered commercial services and are worth 99.3% of all exported services from China. Government goods and services account for the remainder.
- Miscellaneous business services: US$69.9 billion (26.4% of China’s total)
- Telecommunications/computer/information services: $47.1 billion (17.8%)
- Transport: $42.3 billion (16%)
- Travel: $39.5 billion (14.9%)
- Construction: $26.6 billion (10%)
- Manufacturing services on other’s inputs: $17.4 billion (6.6%)
- Maintenance/repair services: $7.2 billion (2.7%)
- Intellectual property use: $5.6 billion (2.1%)
- Insurance/pension services: $4.9 billion (1.9%)
- Financial services: $3.5 billion (1.3%)
- Government goods, services: $1.75 billion (0.7%)
- Personal, cultural, recreational services: $1.2 billion (0.5%)
Three of the above categories posted triple-digit gains in value from 2014 to 2018 namely intellectual property use (up 722.3%), personal, cultural and recreational services (up 594.2%) then telecommunications, computer and information services (up 133.3%).
In contrast, China’s revenues for three categories declined over the five-year period: financial services (down -23.2%), manufacturing services on physical inputs owned by others (down -18.7%) and travel-related services (down -10.4%).

Based on the latest available data, the following list highlights 13 countries (or territories) that imported the highest value of services furnished by mainland China. Together, these 13 trading partners received 70.1% of Chinese services provided to international clients.

- South Korea: 5.1%
- Germany: 3.8%
- United Kingdom: 3.4%

- France: 1.8%

- South Africa: 0.3%
- Brazil: 0.3%
Seven of these trading partners boosted their purchases of Chinese export services year over year namely Russia (up 21.1%), Taiwan (up 8.9%), South Africa (up 6.8%), Germany (up 3.7%), France (up 2.4%), United Kingdom (up 2.1%) and India (up 1.7%).
Leading the reductions over the two-year period belong to Brazil (down -21.6%), Macao (down -19.6%), Hong Kong (down -9.6%) and United States (down -5.6%).
