Year over year, the dollar value of chickpea exports accelerated by 21.7% compared to $1.76 billion starting from 2022.
The 5 most lucrative exporters of chickpeas are Australia, Russia, Türkiye, India and Canada. Collectively that group of chickpeas suppliers generated three-quarters (75.4%) of all international sales of chickpeas during 2023.
Applying a continental lens, sellers in Asia sold the highest dollar worth of exported chickpeas during 2023 with shipments valued at $629.3 million or 29.4% of the global total. In second place were exporters in mostly Australia in the Oceania continent at 21.1% while 20.6% of international chickpeas sales were sourced from Europe. Another 18.3% and 8.7% originated from North America and Africa, respectively.
A smaller 1.9% share came from providers located in Latin America excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean.

Turning attention to imported chickpeas, the 5 leading importers of chickpeas in 2023 are Pakistan, Türkiye, Bangladesh, India and the United Arab Emirates. Collectively, that quintet of top buyers bought more than half (54.5%) of globally imported chickpeas by dollar value.
The above percentages suggest that there is a more concentrated cohort of chickpeas exporters (75.4% for top 5 suppliers) compared to 54.5% for the top 5 importers nations.
Zooming out to a continental perspective, 65.4% of globally imported chickpeas were delivered to Asian countries well ahead of importers in Europe (14.9%), Africa (9.7%), North America (6.8%), Latin America (2.9%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, then Oceania (0.2%) led by New Zealand.
