The overall value of fertilizers imported in 2023 increased by an average 42.5% from all importing countries from 5 years earlier in 2019 when fertilizers purchases were valued at $71.1 billion.
Year over year, international purchases of fertilizers shrank by -33.8% compared to $153.1 billion starting in 2022.
Key Geographic Insights for Exported Fertilizers
The 5 biggest importers of fertilizers in 2023 were Brazil, India, United States of America, mainland China and France. That cohort of major buyers paid over two-fifths (42.8%) of total international spending on fertilizers imported in 2023.
From a continental perspective, Asian countries spent the most on imported fertilizers during 2023 with purchases costing $32.4 billion or 32% of the global total. In second place were importers in Europe at 21.5% while 21.3% of globally imported fertilizers was delivered to Latin America excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean.
Another 14.6% was sent to importers in North America.
Smaller percentages were sold to buyers in Africa (7.6%), and Oceania (2.9%) led by Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.
Sales by Type of Imported Fertilizers
As for different categories of imported fertilizers, almost three-quarters (71.9%) were nitrogen-based products.
Potassic fertilizers represent 24.1% compared to phosphatic fertilizers at 2.9%. Excluding those mineral or chemical fertilizer subcategories, the other fertilizer type is animal or vegetable fertilizers which accounted for the remaining 1.1%.
