Overall sales of exported figs rose by an average 19.3% from 5 years earlier in 2019 when globally exported figs sales totaled $614.9 million.
Year over year, the dollar value of exported figs accelerated by 17.3% compared to $625.3 million starting from 2022.
Figs are edible fruits from small flowering trees with white bark. While figs are eaten fresh or dried, they are also processed into jams, biscuits, rolls and other types of desserts.
The 5 biggest exporters of figs (Türkiye, Afghanistan, Austria, Germany and the Netherlands) generated nearly four-fifths (79.2%) of all international figs sold during 2023.
Applying a continental lens, countries in Asia sold the highest dollar worth of exported figs during 2023 with shipments valued at $538.6 million or 73.4% of the global total. In second place were exporters located in Europe (21.6%). Smaller international sales of figs originated from sellers in North America (2.3%), Latin America (2.1%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, Africa (0.6%) and Oceania’s (0.02%) Australia and New Zealand.
Shifting our focus to fig imports, the 5 leading importers of figs in 2023 are India, Germany, United States of America, France and Austria. Combined, that quintet of top import countries bought half (50.1%) of globally imported figs.
Those percentages suggest a more concentrated cohort of 85 total figs exporters (79.2% for corresponding top 5 exporters) compared to about 165 buying countries, islands and territories with the top 5 importers consuming under half (50.1%).
Of the global imports total, 49.3% of figs was delivered to European countries ahead of importers in Asia (33.8%), North America (11.8%), Africa (3.6%), Oceania (1.1%) mostly Australia plus New Zealand, then Latin America (0.4%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean.
Worldwide, we calculated the average unit price paid by figs importers to be $4,825 per ton in 2023. That dollar amount reflects 42.7% in inflation compared to the average tonnage rate of $3,400 for 2022.
