Applying a continental perspective, countries in Asia supplied the highest dollar worth of exported hazelnuts during 2023 with shipments valued at $1.21 billion or 61.6% of the global total. In second place were exporters located in Europe (19.4%) trailed by those in suppliers in Latin America (12%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, North America (7%), Africa (0.01%), and Oceania (0.003%) led by Australia.
Shifting our focus to imports, the 5 leading importers of hazelnuts in 2023 were buyers in Germany, Italy, France, Canada and the Russian Federation. Combined, that quintet of top import countries bought over two-thirds (68.4%) of globally imported hazelnuts as measured by dollar value.
The above percentages suggest the 60-something exporters of hazelnuts (85.4% for the corresponding top 5 exporters) is a more concentrated cohort compared to nearly 160 buying countries, islands and territories. As specified in the previous paragraph, the top 5 importers accounted for a smaller portion of its world total for imported hazelnuts at 68.4%.
As for global imports of hazelnuts by continent, 77.1% of hazelnuts purchased on international markets was delivered to customers in Europe ahead of importers in North America (7.08%), Asia (7.05%), Latin America (4.1%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, Africa (3.6%), and Oceania (1.1%) led by Australia and New Zealand.
We calculated the average unit price collected by exporters of hazelnuts still in their shells to be $3,010 per ton in 2023. That dollar amount reflects a -12.4% deflation rate compared to the average tonnage rate of $3,437 for 2022.
Exports of shelled hazelnuts demanded a higher unit price. For shelled hazelnuts, the average unit price received by exporters was $6,782 per ton in 2023 inflating by 16.9% from the average tonnage rate of $5,800 for 2022. The higher average price results in part from shelling labor costs and other processing expenses, albeit that price did fall in the latest reporting period.
For research purposes, the 6-digit Harmonized Tariff System code prefix is 080221 for fresh or dried hazelnuts in shell, and 080222 for fresh or dried shelled hazelnuts.
Drilling down on those categories, 93.9% of hazelnuts exported worldwide by value were for shelled hazelnuts up from 92.4% for 2022. The remaining 6.1% in 2023 was paid for hazelnuts still in their shells compared to 7.6% in the prior year.
