Exports of fresh peaches grew in value by an average 5.8% from 5 years earlier in 2019 when export sales for peaches equaled $2.2 billion.
Year over year, the overall value of peaches exported worldwide shrank by -6% compared to $2.47 billion starting from 2022.
Peaches and nectarines are the same species of juicy fruits, albeit they are sold commercially as distinct products. Another difference is that peach skin is fuzzy while nectarines typically have smooth skin.
By value, the 5 biggest exporters of fresh peaches (Spain, Türkiye, United States of America, Chile and Italy) shipped over two-thirds (67.4%) of all peaches exported during 2023.
Applying a continental perspective, countries in Europe supplied the highest dollar worth of exported peaches during 2023 with shipments valued at $1.35 billion or 58.2% of the global total. In second place were exporters in Asia (23.3%), North America (6.3%), Latin America (6.2%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, Africa (4.1%), and Oceania (1.9%) mostly Australia.
Shifting our focus to imports, the 5 leading importers of peaches in 2023 are Germany, Russia, France, Italy and the United Kingdom. Combined, that quintet of top import countries bought 45.6% of globally imported peaches as measured by dollar value.
Those percentages suggest the total 88 exporters of peaches (67.4% for corresponding top 5 exporters) is a more concentrated cohort compared to about 170 buying countries, islands and territories. As mentioned above, the top 5 importers account for a smaller portion of its world total at 45.6%.
As for global imports of peaches by continent, 71.5% of peaches purchased on international markets was delivered to customers in Europe trailed by importers in Asia (16.7%), North America (9.2%), Latin America (1.4%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, Africa (1.1%), and Oceania (0.1%) led by Australia.
We calculated the average unit price paid by peaches importers to be $1,587 per ton in 2023. That dollar amount reflects 3.1% in inflation from the average tonnage rate of $1,539 during 2022.
