Imports of electricity bought by the United States totaled $2.3 billion resulting from a -28.6% drop in US spending on electrical power compared to $3.2 billion one year earlier.
The total value of US electricity imports retreated by -14.4% from $2.6 billion for 2021.
The dollar total for US exported electricity arose shipments from 14 American states. In contrast, America’s electricity imports arrived in 22 states.
As a result, America’s trade deficit specific to electric energy amounted to -US$1.5 billion, shrinking by -28.4% from -$2 billion for 2023.
Over the 4-year timeframe, the US shortfall for international trade in electricity declined by -33.7% from -$2.1 billion in 2021.

- Massachusetts: $15.4 million (down -41.5%)
- New York state: $4.6 million (up 136.4%)
- Maine: $2.5 million (down -81.7%)
- Oregon: $1.4 million (down -50.5%)
- Texas: $901,485 (down -74.8%)
- Michigan: $719,787 (up 21.7%)

Among the above states, 4 grew their global sales of exported electricity year over year. These were Connecticut (up 486.4% from 2023), New York state (up 136.4%), Indiana (up 109.6%) and Michigan (up 21.7%).
There were 10 decliners, led by electricity exporters in Maine (down -81.7% from 2023), Montana (down -77.7%), Texas (down -74.8%), Oregon (down -50.5%) then Florida (down -42.3%).
America’s Electricity Imports by Top States
There are more US electricity import states or districts than export states, by a ratio of 22 to 14.
The 3 leading import states (Minnesota, Vermont and Washington state) spent over half (52.8%) of electricity bought by all American power-importing states during 2024.

The US importer geographies incurring the severest declines in spending on imported electricity were Texas (down -94.9% from 2023), Ohio (down -93.4%), North Dakota (down -65.8%), Arizona (down -51.6%), Vermont (down -50.9%) and California (down -45.5%).
Where the US Buys and Sells Electricity on International Markets
One hundred percent of America’s electricity imports are furnished by its northern friend and ally, Canada.
Similarly, Canada is the sole customer for electrical energy exported by the US.
